Members of Montreal’s Chinese community gathered Monday to mourn the impending closure of Chinatown’s Wing Noodles after nearly 90 years of operation in food production and another 49 years as an import/export business. Run by brothers Garnet and Gilbert Lee, the family-run factory will shutter at the end of November.
Founded in 1897 by Chinese immigrant Hee Chong Lee, the company originally known as Wing Lung dealt in Chinese goods. Lee was joined by his sons Arthur and Samuel in 1946 as the name changed to Wing Hing Lung and the company switched to making noodles, and egg roll and won ton covers. It later expanded to fortune cookies, almond cookies and sauces and obtained kosher certification for its entire line of products, and became Wing Noodles Ltd.
