A mother and her three young children tragically lost their lives in a house fire in Bradford, allegedly set by the woman's sister's ex-partner. Bryonie Gawith, 29, and her children, Denisty Birtle, nine, Oscar Birtle, five, and 22-month-old Aubree Birtle, died in the blaze that occurred on August 21 last year. Sharaz Ali, 40, and Calum Sunderland, 26, are facing charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident. They are accused of attempting to kill Antonia Gawith, Bryonie's sister, who managed to escape the fire. During the opening of the case at Doncaster Crown Court, prosecutor David Brooke KC detailed how Ali, Sunderland, and another man, Mohammed Amjid Shabir, arrived at the Gawith home with seven litres of petrol. Surveillance footage captured Sunderland carrying a petrol can and lighter. Brooke recounted, "As they got to the front door, Sunderland put down the petrol cannister. Sharaz Ali can be heard instructing him to ‘kick the door in’ and that is exactly what Sunderland did before running away back to the car." Ali then allegedly entered the house, poured petrol inside, and ignited it. The fire resulted in the deaths of Bryonie and her children, while Antonia was the only survivor. The prosecutor described the incident as a catastrophic event, stating, "Motivated by jealousy and fuelled by drink and drugs, it is obvious that he decided to take revenge on his ex-partner Antonia regardless of the potential consequences for others." Brooke emphasised that Ali was the primary instigator, asserting that he intended to kill Antonia by burning down the house. Shabir, who was also charged, died of natural causes while in custody before the trial. The court proceedings continue as the jury hears more about the tragic events that unfolded that night.
