UK snow will be "worse than feared", it has been revealed, as predictions are upgraded and the Met Office issues a rare amber alert for the white stuff.

Frequent wintry showers, leading to significant snow accumulations, are likely to cause disruption on Thursday, the Met Office has warned. Expect tavel delays on roads, stranding some vehicles and passengers,.

The Met Office says: "Power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected. There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.
