LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Over the summer, Lexington Vice Mayor Dan Wu announced a partnership between the Urban County Council and a nonprofit that would relieve millions of dollars in medical debt for people in Fayette County.
Tuesday morning, Vice Mayor Wu, council members and medical professionals gathered to share more on this project.
Major debt relief announced
“In partnership with Undo Medical Debt, we have purchased and abolished $12,641,416.24 of unpaid medical debt, providing much needed relief to 6,484 of our residents,” Wu said.
The council entered a contract with the organization to allocate $1 million toward this initiative. Wu said the return on investment made it a good use of general fund dollars.
“We’re essentially getting 90 to 100 to 1 on our money,” Wu said.
