(WIFR) - Digital IDs are coming to Illinois.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced Tuesday Illinois driver’s licenses or state IDs will be available to add to users’ Apple Wallet starting Wednesday, Nov. 19, just in time for the holiday travel season.

Leaders say the digital IDs will be protected by the same privacy and encryption technology used for tap-to-pay and digital airline boarding passes.

“This is just the beginning. The first step in bringing mobile IDs to the state of Illinois,” said Giannoulias.

The Secretary of State’s Office says digital IDs are not a replacement for a physical ID, and for now, residents must continue to carry their physical ID.
