LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The American Cancer Society dedicates the third Thursday of November to spreading awareness about the dangers of smoking through its “Great American Smokeout” campaign.

The initiative, which has been around since the mid-1970s, encourages smokers to quit for at least one day. The campaign has since expanded to include vaping awareness.

Local non-profit officials say the event makes a difference by bringing people together to help kick the habit as a team.

“Maybe have a friend with you, so you can have accountability. It’s a hard step to take, but there’s a lot of support out there,” said Veronica Jimenez, program director at Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN).
