A young army veteran has collapsed and died in front of his girlfriend just moments after he finished a half-marathon.
Scottie Williams, 28, had crossed the finish line of the Silver Strand Veterans Day Half Marathon in San Diego on November 9 when he fell to the ground near a water station.
Medics on standby for the race rushed to help Mr Williams, and attempted to perform CPR for more than an hour and a half.
Tragically, he could not be revived and died at the scene.
His mother, Katherine Yglesias-Herrera, told the New York Post she could not comprehend how her young, healthy and athletic son could die so quickly.
“Twenty-eight years old…makes no sense,” she said.
Bree Rivera, Mr Williams’ girlfriend, had been waiting for him at the finish line.
