DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - A MercyOne Genesis doctor recently performed the first surgery of its kind in Iowa using new technology to treat atrial fibrillation.
Dr. Mark Shen performed the surgery using a new system called “Affera Mapping and Ablation” to treat atrial fibrillation, a disease when the heart’s upper chambers beat out of rhythm.
The system helps physicians customize treatment based on a patient’s needs during an ablation procedure. That’s when heat or cold energy is used to destroy abnormal tissue.
“There are several features in that procedure that make me feel like this is new and very exciting, there are several features on that ablation tool that tell me every lesion I created doing that ablation is effective,” Shen said.
The technology was recently approved by the FDA.
