A 24-year-old Houston man was arrested and charged after he broke into a person's vehicle after they made a trip to the ATM in Woodbury, authorities announced Wednesday, Nov. 19.
On Sunday, Oct. 5, officers responded after a person's car window was broken and money was taken, part of a new crime trend called "jugging," popular in the southern United States, Woodbury police said.
A jugging is when a suspect conducts surveillance at local banks operating stolen or rented vehicles, police said. Once the suspects see someone exiting the bank with a bank bag or suspected large sum of money, they will follow them in their vehicle’s to another location, police said. Once stopped again, these suspects will either rob or burglarize the victim’s vehicle once they exit, police said.
An investigation determined Reginald Chatman Jr. as the suspect and he was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief and receiving stolen property, police said.
Chatman is currently in custody for a similar “jugging” incident in Oklahoma City, police said. He will be extradited to New Jersey in the future, police said.
