As winter weather arrives in New Mexico, drivers are being urged to prepare for cooler nights and potential rain and snow. KOAT meteorologist Eric Green advises motorists to check their tire pressure and tread depth, as colder temperatures can trigger tire pressure sensor lights and lead to quick wear on tires.
"If you've been nursing a set of tires down in tread depth and you're close to the bars, and then we pick up the steady rain and the water ponds a little bit on the roadways, it really decreases the traction you have available for your car," Green said. "This is also a time of year where you start to see those tire pressure sensor lights come on just because the air is colder. That can help result in additional quick wear on tires. And so that's a big concern there. I
