WELLPINIT, Wash. — A man died in the Spokane River on Sunday evening while fleeing from law enforcement, according to the Spokane Tribal Police.

Police say officers attempted to make contact with a 42-year-old man who had active warrants for his arrest out of Lincoln County, Stevens County and Minnesota.

STP says the man fled from officers near the junction of the Spokane and Columbia Rivers, leading them on a chase. The man then jumped over an embankment into the Spokane River and did not resurface.

Police say after a search by the Spokane County Dive Team, the man's body was located and recovered.

The police department says the incident is under investigation and asks anyone with relevant information to contact Spokane Tribal Detectives at (509) 258-4569.
