POUGHKEEPSIE – Police have arrested a suspect in the September 27, 2025, shooting that occurred on Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Poughkeepsie resident Malachi Cornwall, 19, has been charged with attempted murder, assault, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon

At approximately 2:30 a.m., officers responded to the area of 313 Main St. for a report of gunfire and a person shot, according to Detective Lieutenant Sean McCarthy. When they arrived, officers found a victim with a gunshot wound to the hip. Additional officers located Cornwall, the potential suspect, in the area and brought him in for questioning. Lacking sufficient evidence to charge Cornwall, he was released, and police continued their investigation into the shooting.
