The basketball season is in full swing as the Emporia State Hornet men’s team played in its home opener against William Jewell on Nov. 19. After splitting their matches in the Hillyard Tipoff Classic, the Hornets, despite a roaring comeback, fell to the Cardinals 77-72.

The game started with the teams’ trading baskets until the under-16-minute media timeout, where the Cardinals held a 10-8 lead. That lead ballooned to 16-8, and for the rest of the first half, the Cardinals slowly built their lead as the Hornets tried to answer with a run of their own, but it never came. The half ended with the Cardinals having a 40-31 lead as they ended the half with a last-second three-pointer.

Head Coach Tom Billeter explained his thoughts on the slow first half from his team in a postgame interview.
