SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - City officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday afternoon for new solar panels at South Bend’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Mayor James Mueller said the wastewater treatment plant is the city’s biggest electricity user, making the solar panel installation a dual effort to reduce greenhouse emissions and save taxpayers money.
The Board of Zoning Appeals announced in April that the panels would be installed.
“We’re looking to reduce our reliance on those power sources that generate carbon emissions, that cause the greenhouse effect and climate change,” Mueller said. “So, we’re doing our part as a city to transition to those cleaner energy sources.”
