More than a dozen people were hospitalized from an ammonia leak at a Rhode Island business on Thursday, and at least two were in critical condition, officials said.

Hazmat teams were working to ventilate the Tyler Farms facility in North Kingstown after the 6 p.m. anhydrous ammonia leak, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

They said 15 people were taken to the hospital. NBC affiliate WJAR reported that 16 people were.

The Department of Environmental Management said a Tyler Farms technician turned of the system, meaning an evacuation wasn't necessary.

The agency was still investigating what caused the leak.
