HOULTON, Maine — The U.S. Border Patrol in Maine has reported a historic number of detentions of people who entered the country illegally this year.
The Border Patrol's Houlton office said in a news release that it has surpassed all previous records, apprehending 725 people illegally present in the US as of Oct. 1. The record before was 685 in 2001.
The detained individuals apparently range from 46 countries.
Members of MS-13, SATG, and Tren de Aragua are allegedly among those detained, according to the Houlton office. An individual wanted for murder by Interpol was also allegedly detained.
It also reported an 80% downturn in unlawful crossings across the U.S.-Canada border in northern Maine with no known "gotaways," or successful illegal crossings without detainment, since January.
