Former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart kicked off her campaign for governor Thursday in front of a few hundred supporters in the Hardware City.

Stewart made the case for change after Democrats have held the governor’s seat since 2011.

“We all know the truth Connecticut is full of potential but it’s being held back for afar to long,” Stewart, a Republican, said.

The event was the first time Stewart spoke publicly since filing paperwork to run for governor on Monday, ending the exploratory committee she formed in January.

Stewart promised to cut taxes and lower electricity rates, improve schools and support law enforcement.

She also touted her success as a Republican mayor in the strongly Democratic city of New Brit
