IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Hundreds of people in Eastern Iowa could face eviction following a seismic shift in how the federal government funds homeless prevention.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development cut its funding to Iowa for homeless prevention by 67% as a result of a policy change from the Trump administration. Previously, Iowa received nearly $7 million annually through the Continuum of Care program; this has been reduced to $2.3 million this year, a cut of $4.7 million.

HUD allocates funding to each state, enabling shelters to help people get off the streets or prevent them from living outside. The funding supports permanent supportive housing and rapid rehousing programs.
