The Western Australian environment minister has approved a new landfill site which will hold millions of cubic metres of waste trucked from Perth to a Midwest town.
The controversial landfill slated for Allawuna Farm in Saint Ronans, 80 kilometres east of Perth in the Shire of York, will be able to hold up 5.6 million cubic metres of waste.
The project by Alkina Holdings, first proposed over a decade ago by a different proponent, was given conditional approval by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA WA) in 2023.
The shire, residents and business owners appealed the EPA's decision, and in October 2024 the former environment minister Reece Whitby put stronger environmental regulations on the approval.
