BBC Breakfast presenters Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt offered their sympathies to guest Lobby Akinnola, whose father died from Covid five years ago.
During the emotional interview, Lobby revealed how his mother learnt that his father had died during the night after catching the virus in 2020.
Before connecting with their guest via video link, Charlie opened: "Families who lost loved ones during the pandemic say they feel let down by the UK Government following an inquiry into its handling of Covid-19 ."
Naga added: "The report found that 1000s of deaths in England could have been avoided if a lockdown had been imposed just a week earlier. In the northeast, nearly 10,000 people died from the disease."
