LIHUE — Personnel from the Kauai Fire Department rescued a 40-year-old female Oahu resident from the Kalalau Trail on Wednesday after she reported being unable to hike out due ankle pain from a preexisting ankle injury.
At approximately 9 a.m., KFD dispatch received a text-to-911 message from the hiker indicating she was unable to safely self-evacuate.
Personnel with the Lihue Fire Station aboard Air 1 responded to the incident shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
First responders arrived on scene near the red hill landing zone and discovered the hiker, who was ambulatory. The hiker was able to walk unassisted to Air 1, but in accordance with safety procedures, rescuers escorted her into the helicopter, which then transported her to Princeville Airport.
