Two women are in the hospital after a sudden explosion at a Midtown parking garage Thursday night, authorities said.

Police and firefighters responded to a call just after 9 p.m. for a reported explosion in a parking garage on East 53rd Street between Lexington and Third avenues. The FDNY said a generator malfunction may be to blame, but officials are still investigating the explosion's cause.

NYPD officials said both women are 25-years-old. Emergency medical workers took them to Weill Cornell Medical Center, with one woman in critical condition and the other with minor injuries, fire officials said.

First responders brought the scene under control just before 9:30 p.m., according to the FDNY. Police said no criminality is currently suspected.
