The mercury plummeted to a bone-chilling minus 11C overnight as Britain's arctic conditions persisted, with health warnings remaining active for another day. The Met Office confirmed this bitter reading was captured at Loch Glascarnoch in the Scottish Highlands, whilst temperatures dropped below minus 7C throughout vast swathes of the nation - and many schools closed.
England and Wales experienced somewhat less severe conditions, recording minus 6C at Trawsgoed in Ceredigion, Wales, and minus 4C at Rostherne, Cheshire. Meteorologist Simon Partridge explained the intense cold resulted from "a little ridge of high pressure moving across the UK overnight", noting "the main difference between that and previous nights is the winds are a lot lighter".
