Police officers fatally shot a man on Friday morning, Nov. 21, after authorities said he wielded a knife at the St. Louis Lambert International Airport in Missouri.
St. Louis County Police reported the shooting took place at 1:05 a.m. while airport police were conducting routine security checks in Terminal 1.
During that time, police said, officers encountered an unidentified man with a knife.
"The suspect refused to drop the weapon and was tased by one police officer," police wrote in an email to USA TODAY. "The suspect continued to advance towards officers, and a second police officer fired his service weapon, striking the male suspect."
The man was pronounced dead on scene, police reported.
No other injuries were reported.
'In an area where he should not have been'
St. Louis County Police spokesperson Vera Clay told ABC News that before the shooting, officers had "noticed the man in an area where he should not have been and refused to leave."
The airport police officers involved in this incident have been with St. Louis Airport Police for 6 months and one year, police reported, adding that both have previous law enforcement experience.
St. Louis County Police Bureau of Crimes Against Persons detectives are investigating the case which police said remained under investigation on Friday.
Police have not identified the officers involved in the incident.
