Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is not hurting children, despite what her critics would have you believe. She is doing the opposite by invoking the notwithstanding clause to save children from the largest medical scandal of our era.
This week, Smith introduced Bill 9, which invokes the Charter’s notwithstanding clause to uphold three pieces of legislation that have come under attack by activists and political rivals.
The acts that Smith is attempting to uphold do several things: keep biological males out of female sports ; ensure parents must provide consent for schools to use different names or pronouns for their children, or to teach them gender ideology; and ban puberty blockers, hormone treatment and gender-reassignment surgeries in youth.
