Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed he is agonising over "one of the most difficult moments" in Ukraine's history as it faces a deadline from Donald Trump to agree to a peace plan.

The US President on Thursday said he would give Kyiv one-week to accept Washington's 28-point peace proposal that involves the endorsement of key Russian demands.

The peace plan includes several points that hinder Ukraine such as calling for it to cede territory, accepting limits to its military and renouncing ambitions to join NATO.

Zelensky delivered a speech on Friday to tell Ukrainians he would never betray the country, but that it had a difficult choice ahead and faced losing the US as a major partner.
