CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County officials are alerting residents to a new scam in which criminals impersonate sheriff’s deputies and pressure families of recently booked individuals to pay for ankle monitors for their loved one’s release.

The Cuyahoga County Scam Squad and Sheriff’s Department say scammers have been contacting residents, falsely claiming that immediate payment is required for monitoring equipment. But “deputies will NEVER call citizens to ask for payments of any kind,” the county said in a news release Thursday.

That’s not the only local scam involving law enforcement. The county said it’s also seeing continued reports of jury-duty–related scams. In these cases, imposters send fake emails or summons to intimidate people into paying a “bond” or other fee to avoid suppos
