A woman was sentenced to life in prison for a 2022 shooting outside the Grand Sierra Resort that left one man dead and another injured.

Carleja Royal had been convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder and will be eligible for parole after 38 years.

Prosecutors said Royal opened fire on Aug. 27, 2022, after waiting more than an hour in her car for the men to leave the GSR pool. Earlier that night, she briefly followed the group into the club area before returning to her car, where another woman was waiting. She then moved the vehicle closer to the breezeway to watch for them to come out.

When the group walked to their cars, she drove past and fired 10 shots, striking both men. The shooting was captured on casino surveillance footage. Officers with the Regional Gang Unit later
