BUCHANAN, Mich. (WNDU) - Hundreds of people gathered Friday morning for a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the reopening of Buchanan’s downtown area after a $20 million reconstruction project that began this spring.
The project replaced 100-year-old water and sewer infrastructure while creating a more accessible streetscape. Streets are now narrower to slow traffic and feature no curbs, making them fully accessible for wheelchair users.
“I figure it will be more accessible, especially for people like me,” said Wine Moss, a Buchanan resident who uses a wheelchair.
Mayor Mark Weedon said the main purpose was replacing century-old utilities.
“The 1925, this is the honest truth. This is the oldest infrastructure in the city. That’s why we did this first,” Weedon said.
