CONCORD, North Carolina – A festive evening turned chaotic Friday when gunfire erupted during the 28th annual tree-lighting ceremony in downtown Concord, injuring four people and prompting the cancellation of the remainder of the event, the Associated Press reported .

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the city’s center, roughly 19 miles northeast of Charlotte, as families and children gathered to mark the holiday tradition, AP said.

Of those shot, three are listed in critical condition while one is stable, CBS News reported .
