The Commonwealth Games has been on quite a journey over the past eighteen months or so.

Just over a year ago, my money was on the likelihood that the Commonwealth Games was finished. I wasn’t alone in making this prediction.

As recently as 2024, and despite Birmingham staging a hugely successful event in 2022, a host for 2026 was literally nowhere to be found.

The Australian state of Victoria was, initially, due to host the 2026 Games. Then they withdrew. Gold Coast stepped-in, then withdrew. Singapore and Malaysia both made noises suggesting they may be keen to host, but also withdrew.

A year before the 2026 Games was due to begin, there was no host and I can’t have been the only one believing the Commonwealth Games had reached the end of the line.
