The Windsor-made hardcore band Grindmother – fronted by a 77-year-old retired social worker and great-grandmother now living on Manitoulin Island – is playing its final shows next month in Toronto and Montreal. Article content Article content

The grindcore band is hanging up its distortion pedals as its lead singer faces an ongoing battle with dementia.

The soft-spoken septuagenarian, except when she’s on stage, has become a beloved figure in the extreme heavy metal music world. She counts legends Henry Rollins and Ozzy Osbourne among her fans.

To keep up the band “mystique,” she is known publicly only as Grindmother.
