Former University of Hawaii quarterback and football coach Nick Rolovich has assumed the head job at Cal on an interim basis after the Golden Bears fired Justin Wilcox on Sunday. ESPN was the first of multiple outlets to report the news, later confirmed by Cal Athletics.

Rolovich, 46, was last a head coach at Washington State from 2020 to 2021. He parted ways with WSU in controversial fashion over his refusal to comply with the Evergreen State’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate for state employees.

He will lead the Bears (6-5, 3-4 Atlantic Coast Conference), including Hawaii-born freshman starting quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, in the season finale against SMU on Saturday.
