SAN FRANCISCO —

The Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza has seen the highest number of drivers crash into the toll booths since 2018, according to traffic data reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Through October of this year, 45 drivers have crashed at the southbound toll booths. According to the data, 29 drivers have crashed in just the last four months.

Bridge officials are not entirely sure why there are more crashes, but they attribute them to an increase in drivers being more distracted.

"One of the main issues we see with drivers driving through the toll plaza is inattentiveness and distraction," said Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz, spokesperson for the Golden Gate Bridge Transportation Authority.
