A survey of residents has found less than 5% support a Local Plan bid for a housing estate on disused sports fields.
Old hockey pitches and tennis courts in Herne Bay have been allocated for a potential 32-home estate in Canterbury City Council’s (CCC) draft Local Plan.
However, residents have rejected the idea and say they would prefer to see the site at Beacon Road used as a green space once again.
The two-acre plot - known locally as Kent Close and once home to the town’s Hockey and Lawn Tennis Club – has become overgrown and is classed as a “brownfield site”.
Spike-topped gates were erected at the entrance to sports fields five years ago, with the public barred from accessing it.
Ever since, Kai Hoffman and others have been campaigning for it to be put back into community use.
