A mob in Chimkoko Village, under Traditional Authority Kayembe in Dowa, killed a man on Saturday night after accusing him of breaking into a house and stealing money.

Mponela Police spokesperson Sergeant Macpatson Msadala has identified the deceased as Mwale Simeon, 34, from the same village.

According to Msadala, Simeon was suspected of breaking into a neighbour’s house and stealing K780,000. The homeowner reportedly saw him fleeing the scene and alerted community members.

The group later tracked Simeon to the Nambuma River, where they assaulted him. Some villagers then rushed him to Kayembe Health Centre, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Police have since condemned the act and urged communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
