AN ENTRY fee to access one of Europe's best preserved standing stone sites on a Scottish island will be introduced, it has been announced.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES) confirmed on Monday that it had received ministerial approval to introduce an admission charge at Calanais Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis, while access for local residents will remain free.
Announcing the introduction of the entry fee, HES said it will help support the long-term sustainable future of the monument, along with enhancing the visitor experience, and helping to care for other heritage sites across the Outer Hebrides.
Located on the west coast of Lewis, the 5000-year-old Calanais Stones are regarded as one of the best preserved prehistoric monuments in Europe.
