Yet it’s the former Everton recruitment chief who, along with CEO Patrick Stewart , has now paid the biggest price after being sacked , having been held responsible for the club’s disastrous summer rebuild that's arguably made them weaker than last season. ‌

Thelwell oversaw the signing of 12 new players but none can claim to be a major success. In fact, the dismal displays of many of the club’s new faces was a key ingredient in the decision to bin boss Russell Martin after only 17 games in charge. ‌

Now it's down to Danny Rohl’s to clean up the mess but it won’t be easy with so much money squandered on players
