PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - An inmate at Pasquotank Correctional Institution is suspected to have died by suicide.
Officials say 49-year-old Tyrus Sanders was found unresponsive in his cell around 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
Staff performed life-saving measures on Sanders, but local EMS pronounced him dead just before 9 p.m.
Law enforcement and the state medical examiner are investigating his death.
The NC Department of Adult Correction is fully cooperating with the investigation and is conducting its own.
Sanders was convicted on habitual felon and drug trafficking charges in July in Catawba County.
His projected release date was in 2041.
