An inquest has revealed the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the deaths of an elderly couple who jumped from cliffs near Whitby Abbey. David Jeffcock, 80, and his wife Susan, 74, were found on rocks at the base of East Cliff on July 30. The couple had sent a letter to their solicitor indicating their intention to end their lives, prompting a police investigation. Mr Jeffcock's nephew, Kevin Shepherd, testified that his uncle suffered from bone cancer, which likely influenced their tragic decision. He stated, "I can only conclude he was in so much pain he didn’t want to keep deteriorating." Shepherd described the couple's deep bond, noting, "Although she was younger, Susan chose to join David. That to me shows their devotion." The couple, who had no children, had spent much of their lives together in Sheffield before fulfilling their dream of retiring to Whitby, a place they cherished. The inquest, held in Northallerton, heard that Mr Jeffcock had visited A&E three times in the year leading up to their deaths, suffering from acute headaches and shortness of breath. A police statement revealed that a member of the public discovered a mobile phone and jacket at the cliff's edge, leading to the grim discovery of the couple's bodies below. Detective Inspector Jenkinson noted that Mr Jeffcock likely jumped first, with Mrs Jeffcock possibly hesitating before following. A jacket was found weighted down with a brick, suggesting prior planning. Coroner Jonathan Leach concluded that both Mr and Mrs Jeffcock had no history of mental health issues, although Mr Jeffcock faced significant physical health challenges. He recorded a verdict of suicide for both individuals, marking a tragic end to their devoted life together.
