New York prisons and jails reported a total of 25 people suffered sepsis-related deaths while in custody amid mounting questions about the incidents in recent years, USA TODAY Network has learned.
Details of those deaths, which occurred at 16 jails and prisons across New York, were revealed as part of a USA TODAY review of unredacted in-custody death reports from the U.S. Department of Justice.
The analysis found at least 1,780 people in custody have died nationally with sepsis or septic shock over a recent eight-year period. New York facilities reported sepsis death rates below the national rate, which showed sepsis was mentioned in about 4% of deaths overall.
