HALIFAX – The federal government has formed a new economic advisory committee aimed at enhancing the Atlantic region's economy. Justice Minister Sean Fraser, who represents Nova Scotia, announced the creation of the Atlantic Economic Panel on Monday. The panel consists of seven members, all of whom bring significant experience in business growth and job creation. Its primary goal is to recommend actionable strategies to generate employment, boost productivity, support local businesses, and strengthen communities across Atlantic Canada. Fraser, who also oversees the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, stated that the panel will be chaired by Don Mills, the president of Crane Cove Holdings and a co-founder of Narrative Research based in Halifax. Other notable members include J. Scott McCain, chairman of McCain Foods in New Brunswick; Joyce Carter, CEO of the Halifax International Airport Authority; and Terry Richardson, chief of the Pabineau First Nation in northeastern New Brunswick. The panel is tasked with delivering a comprehensive report by September of next year. Fraser emphasized the importance of local input, saying, “We are bringing together top local business leaders because we want Atlantic Canadians to get their fair share of the opportunities coming to our region.” He added that the panel plans to travel throughout the region next year to gather insights directly from residents and businesses about the challenges and successes they face. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to fostering economic development in Atlantic Canada and ensuring that the region can capitalize on emerging opportunities.
