A group of students at the New Jersey Institute of Technology have filed a lawsuit against the university, alleging administrators refuse to recognize their campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine .

The complaint claims NJIT discriminated against pro-Palestinian students by blocking their approval of the organization since 2023, according to the lawsuit, filed Nov. 18 in Superior Court of Essex County.

“The denial of plaintiffs’ request for SJP-NJIT to be formally recognized as an NJIT student organization is unlawful discrimination based on race and a violation of civil rights,” the students allege in the complaint.

A spokesperson for NJIT declined to discuss the lawsuit on Monday, saying the university does not comment on litigation.
