OLYMPIA, Wash. — Gov. Bob Ferguson made his first appointment to the Washington Supreme Court Monday. Civil rights attorney Colleen Melody will replace Justice Mary Yu , who is retiring, on the state's highest court.
In 2015, Ferguson created the Wing Luke Civil Rights Division while he was serving as Washington's Attorney General. Melody, a career civil rights attorney, has led the division since its inception.
“Colleen Melody has devoted her career to standing up for those who often don’t have a voice in our justice system,” Ferguson said. “As Attorney General, I worked extremely closely with Colleen, where I had a front row seat to her immense legal skills, prodigious work rate, and passion for justice.
