HARWOOD, N.D. — A ceremonial groundbreaking was held for a Fargo National Cemetery facility that will offer greater comfort to families of veterans and those who honor them.

The Veterans Memorial Center will be built on the site of the cemetery at 8709 40th Ave. N., Harwood, starting the next construction season.

Sen. John Hoeven, along with members of the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard and federal, state and local leaders, stood in a cold wind Monday, Nov. 24, to raise shovels of dirt for the project.

A special guest was Veterans Affairs Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Sam Brown, a U.S. Army veteran who was seriously burned by a bomb set by the Taliban in 2008 while serving in Afghanistan.

Brown said the addition to the Fargo National Cemetery will be a one-of-a-kind location.
