LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
As the National Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate the deadly UPS crash that killed 14 people and injured multiple others, the latest NTSB preliminary report from last week highlights the comparison to another crash that happened nearly 50 years ago.
American Airlines Flight 191 crashed in Chicago in 1979, killing 273 people.
Two hundred and seventy-one people were killed on board, and two people were killed on the ground.
This was a McDonnell Douglas DC-10 plane, the precursor to the MD-11.
The NTSB noted this flight in its report because of its similar circumstances.
During the takeoff rotation, the left engine and pylon assembly, and about 3 feet of the leading edge of the left wing, separated from the airplane and fell to the runway.
