MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A local rescue is stepping in after dozens of dogs were abandoned, living in filth and fear in Ceres, a community just up Highway 99 south of Modesto.
Action News was there as New Beginnings for Merced County Animals helped unload crates of chihuahuas at a safe location in Winton.
Images of the heartbreaking discovery were shared by the organization.
They say a tenant moved out, leaving puppies, nursing moms and senior dogs without food.
In total, there were more than 70 dogs reportedly being hoarded between two homes.
Volunteers have spent the last couple of days saving dogs, which they say have never known human compassion.
