Robbers were attempting to make an unusual withdrawal from an Etobicoke bank, using a backhoe to break into the building early on Monday morning.

Toronto police responded to reports of a break and enter in progress at a bank in the area of Rexdale Boulevard and Islington Avenue around 3:15 a.m., according to investigators.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the backhoe was used to ram the exterior wall of the bank’s ATM room.

No injuries were reported and no suspects have been arrested, investigators said.

It is unknown if anything was stolen, although police are investigating the incident as a break-and-enter.
