TRENTON, Fla. (WCJB) - Trenton city leaders continue moving forward with a plan to dissolve its small police department and turn law enforcement duties over to the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office after city commissioners voted 4–1.
Under the plan, four full-time and four part-time officers will remain on the city payroll until Feb. 28, 2026, before their positions are eliminated. The city’s public safety chief will stay on in a limited role that mirrors his duties the last time Trenton contracted with the sheriff’s office in 2017, focusing on community relations and administrative coordination.
The decision came after more than an hour of tense and sometimes emotional public comment inside Trenton City Hall, where the crowd was overwhelmingly opposed to cutting the local force.
