BEREA, Ohio -- Michelle Park Lazette started her writing career as a journalist. In fact, she spent some time as a reporter for the Sun Newspapers.

After a decade at newspapers across the country, she stepped into the corporate world.

Now, after 20 years as a professional writer, Lazette has debuted her first novel -- “The Descended.”

“Fiction can get much closer and I can get inside someone’s head,” she said. “Covering school boards, the only thing that gets into the paper is the facts.”

Lazette said someone once advised her that fiction looks deeper.

“People don’t stay for the story; they stay for the characters,” she recalled.

“The Descended” is a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy set in Northeast Ohio, with some rather interesting characters. The main character is journalist Audrey
